IS DRUMMING FOR YOU?

I think that if you like to dance, then you'll like playing the drums.  I mean, if you're someone who just has to tap their foot to the music or get up and dance, then, you should look into becoming a drummer.

I get a lot of people, mostly women, asking me how to get started playing the drums.   The first thing, of course, is to get some drums to play, and you have two choices here.

You can play acoustic drums or electronic drums.  Acoustic drums are wonderful but they're loud!  Electronic drums, on the other hand, are great for when you have to be quiet because you can turn them down and listen only in your headphones!

I started on electronic drums that I bought second hand.  But whether you have an acoustic set or an electronic set, you'll want these basic items:  A snare drum, a bass drum, and a hi-hat.  And sticks.

If you can get more than that — like toms, ride cymbals, crashes, and chimes and a cowbell — then get them too!  But at the very least, you should be able to get enough sounds out of your a snare drum, bass drum, and hi-hat that you can get by for a little while.

But even if you can't get drums yet, you can get a lot of good practice just out of a pair of sticks.  Find any surface on which your drum sticks will bounce or make a nice sound:  A book, a desk, a pillow, anything really that won't immediately shatter into a thousand pieces.
